What is Confirmation?

The question is often asked, 'How is Confirmation different from Youth Ministry if they both serve the youth in High School age groups'? The beauty of the Catholic Church in how the people of God connect to God through the grace of the Sacraments. Confirmation is the Sacramental portion of Youth Ministry in which Catechetical courses take place to educate and engage in preparation for the Sacrament. Confirmation is the completion of the Christian Initiation Process that complements what was received in Baptism and in the Eucharist.

Where as Youth Ministry is simply the continuation of faith formation through fellowship, ministry nights, bible study’s and other opportunities to encounter God in daily life as young person.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines the Sacrament of Confirmation as such:

1285 Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the "sacraments of Christian initiation," whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace.89 For "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed."90
